Wet kiln dried 2x4 and plywood formwork in a tropical environment? Does it get any better than that? My Tybee cottages being built by Keith Gay Jr. are coming along nicely. These simple 12"x 16" piers sport some of the best concrete work I have seen. Champhered corners, no air pockets, just a real fine workmanship like job. It's not Stonehenge, but so far so very good!

I have always loved the primitave beauty of post and beam construction. He did a great job in his one inning of relief / setup work. This is only the second time in his college career that he has used the sidearm or submarine delivery. He has become a productive contributor to the team, and as coach Wollenburg told him, he is now a viable option for the Bees. Her job at the Tybee YMCA has given me a discounted membership. Callahan and Chelsea both work for the Y so their memberships are included. I am taking Zumba and Water Aerobics with Chelsea and Laura, Tone and Burn with Sunny and Bonnie, Spin class with Randi, Core Fitness with James and April, Yoga with Betsy, Will, Susan and Jim.... not to mention Family Fusion Surf Camp with Turner and Alex last summer and all of the other great programs like Skate Night in the gym etc., etc., etc.
The Y's motto: “We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities,” will happen if you take advantage of all the Y has to offer. After a year of working out at the Y, see for yourself the improvements in this picture taken at the Polar Bear Plunge in 2008 and again in 2009.

Since I took the new job with the City of Savannah 2 weeks ago, my challenge will be to stay fit and get my workouts in around that 8-5 schedule. I'm calling them The Tybee Cottages. The project consists of two new single family houses and one new duplex. The duplex is made up of two of the single family houses connected by grade level storage rooms. The three lots will share a private driveway. The big idea for the design came from the Katrina Cottage, a small human scaled house that was born as an alternative to the FEMA trailers that the federal gov't. was sending to house people that lost their home when hurricane Katrina hit a few years ago. Architects and designers like Marianne Cusato (author of Get Your House Right, one of my latest favorite books) came up with good looking small houses with front porches, clapboard siding, good proportions, and even though they are small (300 SF to around 1800 SF) they look and feel like a proper house.

There is a Katrina Cottage on Tybee that was just finished last year. The plans and materials were purchased at Lowe's. My project began as a Lowe's Katrina (google Lowe's Katrina Cottage) Cottage, but the client's program required that the bedroom be bigger, and the bath be more luxurious, and added a deck off the bedroom with a two person hot tub, for those oooh la la Tybee beach getaways. So it is looking like a honeymoon cottage with a huge master bath, a murphy bed and a sleeper sofa in the greatroom with fireplace, and a cool kitchen with farm sink, dishwasher and an island on castors that can be moved out of the way. I can't show the 730 SF floor plan yet, but here is a preliminary front elevation.

Chelsea Pyrch in Savannah Danse Theater's Nutcracker

Chelsea performed in Savannah Danse Theater's Nutcracker last Saturday night and then we went went to see Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp's Movin' Out on Sunday night. Chelsea was a bright star: very crisp and professional in her roles as the Scarlet O'Hara doll, the Spanish Hot Coco dancer and in the Arabian Night Java piece. The Setting was Savannah, Christmas eve 1945, in the gingerbread house on Bull Street. I was happy for her to have done so well and given the opportunity to excel so quickly after only being here a few months. I liked her performances the most, not only because she is my daughter, but because she was truly flying across the stage! I loved the intimacy of the historic Lucas Theater. Another great part of the evening was having Archie, Peggy and Marcie over for Kathleen's chicken noodle soup and spicy chili dinner before the show. Archie treated to Leopold's Ice cream after! Cal was there as were Billy and Danny. We sat a few rows back from the orchestra pit, and enjoyed the fine sound under the baton of Peter Shannon. Peter also conducted Mozart's Requiem at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist church that we went to last October. Movin' out was awesome in the dancing and live music, but I'll take the calming grace of the Lucas any day over the Johnny Mercer Theatre.

It's my birthday

Had a fantastic day in Savannah with the family and Chelsea's BF Billy. He will be going on to bigger and better things soon and Tybee is lucky to have him now as Mayor.

Slip the Otter Goes Shopping

Slip the Otter goes shopping for jet skis at Tybees Lazaretto Dock. He comes off as just a regular guy and and lulls you into thinking it is easy. You know he is a star architect because during the first 5 0r 10 minutes of his talk, camera phones were flashing on him nonstop. He even asked the crowd, "are you really taking my picture?"

Frank Gehry, previously known as Francis Goldberg, formerly "doing chain link fences and all that shit" and part of "five bags of shit" at USC, whatever that was, has really made some cool buildings. The thing I like most about the whole deal is that he has taken architects back to the "master builder" concept where we as architects must become builders and constructors. Gehry builds so many study models of these seemingly crazy buildings that are not really crazy at all. They are so well thought out in evey dimension both in his customized CATIA software to a 1" = 10'-0" scale study model of the interior of Disney Hall to work out the acoustics.

Bravo! Callahan didn't enter as he and his roomate Patrick had baseball recruits to usher around, and just as well, because there was a downpour before the artists were finished. Everything was washed out but a few brave souls who threw their bodies over their art with blankets and umbrellas! Forsyth Park was abuzz with activity and so much great art! We had a marvelous day at Starland Farmer's Market, and the 2nd annual Gordonston Art Fair, and the Savannah Market Bazaar. So many things to do, but good to get back to Tybee and take a long walk on the beach.

Tour de Georgia

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5191724094213701442" style="DISPLAY: block; Tim recently purchased Pack Rat bicycle shop in downtown Tybee, and is changing the name to Fat Tire Bikes, and was in need of a drawing of a bicycle for his new logo. Tim was getting his haircut at crazy Judy's and noticed my business cards in the rack. He called me and asked me if I could help him out with a drawing. Of course, I told him I love to draw. Tim wanted a drawing that an "edgy T-shirt" guy would like. Being an edgy T-shirt guy myself, I had no problem coming up with a sketch. I had to add the classic, only found on Tybee, made from a piece of PVC with cozy, soda can holder to the bike for the final touch. Happy beach cruising!

The drawing is pencil on mylar, 8 1/2" x 11." I will post the final logo as soon as it hits the street, Can't wait to get the T-shirt.

Interior architecture

Here is the design floor plan combining three cut-up small bedrooms into the new master suite

View of existing bedroom with nice bay window

This small room is where the current master bedroom is located. So it only makes sense to make it a 4 bedroom house now, and the future plan is to add on a first floor master suite, and then this second floor master becomes the guest or in-law suite. This has been a fun project for me to work on here at my Tybee studio. I really enjoy creating interior perspectives, by accurately building the spaces in the computer, and then rendering them in colored pencil in this case or pen and ink and watercolor.

Mercer Williams House

Pen, ink and watercolor of Mercer Williams House
11”x8” by Ed Pyrch

Made famous by the book and movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Jim Williams purchased this vacant house in 1969 for $55,000. This Italianate house and carriage house takes up an entire block.

When I was on site working on this drawing I noticed that the trademark wisteria vine that hung over the frontispiece was missing. I don't know if it was removed permanently or just for painting or what, but I left it off this rendition. Chelsea, Kathleen and I took the tour of the first floor and I really enjoyed walking through these well proportioned spaces.

I sold a 4"x5" mini water color of this painting today at the Gallery by the Sea to a nice young couple from Texas here on their anniversary. I have two more 4"x5" framed and matted mini watercolors left at $30.00 each. I can create any size watercolor desired because I have a digital photo of the line work before I added the watercolor to the original, so I just print out the line work on watercolor paper. The original pen and ink and watercolor is on illustration board and has a beautiful traditional gold leaf decorative frame and double matt. It will go home to the first collector with $600.00 plus shipping. Email me at epyrch@gmail.com for prices on a custom size original watercolor. Also, these make great gifts, and remember that I can do a custom house portrait of your home. It is run by John and Mildred Hill (grandma and grampa Pyrch were Mildred and John!). They were nice enough to take 3 of my paintings and note cards to put up for sale. The gallery is located at 1207-A Hwy 80 East. It is right next door to a little shop called Seaside Sister's, a cool little antique / boutique shop that gets a lot of traffic. On the other side is a garden store. I am really excited to have my work in a gallery again. The last gallery was Quarters in Harbor Springs, MI. Gallery by the Sea is having a little open house and artist exhibition on Saturday March 29th for all their artists. Author Mary Kay Andrews is having a book signing next door at Seaside Sister's the same day, so it will be a busy day.

Art Crawl was good

I didn't sell any paintings but did meet many people. We had nearly 200 or so people come through the show and so many great complements and potential leads on architecture jobs. I also did this pen, ink and watercolor of Forsyth Park Fountain (in Savannah). I took a digital photo of the original sharpie on cresent board drawing, made several prints on water color paper, and individually hand watercolored each prints. I'm asking $75.00 for a 4"x6" painted print in an 8"x10" matted frame, and $125.00 for a 6"x9" painted print in an 11"x14" matted frame under glass. Maybe people didn't realized they were original watercolors and felt that $75.00 was too much? Shipping would be extra. If you are interested send me an email at epyrch@gmail.com. The original is 11-1/2"wide x 17" tall, has a 3-1/2" matt with pencil drawn borders. The art is under glass and has a wonderfull ornate antique frame that I picked up at an auction about 10 years ago in Columbus. This piece is going for $600.00. Notecards with envelopes are also available.

I am very grateful to Nancy Maine and John L'moure, the owner and builder of 1403 Solomon Ave (the house where the artwork is displayed) for making the show possible. The cool thing is that the artwork is still up and can be seen by private appointment.

Tybee Art Crawl March 9, 2008 from 2-6 p.m

Rainbow Row 24"x16" pastel 500.00

Tybee Island Light 24"x20" acrylic 500.00

On Sunday March 9Th I will be displaying about 15 original paintings with two other artists, Nancy Maine and Ted Strezpek in a speculative house nearing completion at 1403 Solomon Avenue on Tybee Island. It would probably involve water and nature, because that's what is abundant out here. I love Savannah Squares, they are great little parks, about 200'x200' curb to curb, not including the streets or walks and small yards in front of buildings. The squares are well defined or negative space created by the positive facades of buildings, townhouses and other public buildings.

There is a very nice piece of land on Tybee Island just around the corner from where I live that is currently platted for more single family homes. It has a fresh water wetland in the center of it and the developer needs a variance to put about 2-4 feet of fill dirt in to rid the land of what I thought I heard the hardship to be, mosquitoes. (no shortage of those pesky little bugs on Tybee) A salt water marsh is bordering the South of the property, Polk Street to the East separates the property from a city run campground where all the coolest RV's gather in one of the nicest, most clean parks I have seen. Here is the plat of the existing, and a few photos of the property.

Rau Residence Kitchen Design

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5165913546176271826" style="DISPLAY: block; Sara and Dr. Rau did not want to change the footprint of this small kitchen, so we used every square inch of space to the maximum. Custom inset flat panel cabinets with leaded glass uppers go well with Sara's desire to keep the existing stainless steel countertop at the sink. New countertops were also stainless. Toe kick drawers add storage below the base cabinets. This project won a regional COTY (contractor of the year) award for kitchen designs under $60,000.00. In the early 1990's, Kathleen and I were living in an 800 S.F. post war cape style house in Upper Arlington, Ohio. While we were looking at a 60 year old farm house for sale on North Star Road, we discovered that the adjacent corner lot was for sale. We put our home on the market, and bought the lot. Next we moved in with Kathleen's Mom, Jean Scully for one year. Callahan and Chelsea loved living with Grandma, and I am forever grateful to my mother-in-law. I miss her and think about her generosity, her music, and the way she loved to live life everyday. I sketched up the design in one sitting. It took 6 months to get financing, line up subcontractors, and get the drawings and permits filed. Six months was the exact amount of time it took from digging the hole, to move in date. It's kind of like the house in the movie, It's a Wonderful Life. The idea was to make it look like it had been on that corner forever. It was a great place for our kids to grow up in, with sidewalks, shopping, schools, park, and pool all within walking distance. I had a great experience being my own architect and builder, and I look forward to finding the right place or project for me here on Tybee Island.

Watercolors

I did a series of three watercolor house portraits for Christmas gifts to clients of Michael Matrka (http://www.matrka.com/), my former employer in Columbus, OH. It was built in 1929, and it provides kids a 2 weeks vacation who otherwise couldn't afford to take one. I'm hoping either of my kids can be a counselor this summer. The ratio is approximately 3 kids to each counselor. This Beautiful brick Georgian style building is even more amazing that for its age, and location so close to the beach, I could not detect any settling cracks. It has wonderful spaces filled with light, and a great stair / entry hall. It reminds me of some of the Georgian style homes I designed for the New Albany country club back in Ohio.

Tybee Post Theater

Here is my rendering I did for the Friends of the Tybee Theater with a current "before" picture above. They will be selling signed limited edition prints for fund raising efforts to restore the theater and help Tybee become a year round destination. The original artwork is a whimsical 18"x24" pencil, pastel, and colored pencil rendering. The Friends have stabilized the building with a new roof.
